European Union Might Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official Says

The EU might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the US against five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe including the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted figures who have been at the heart of efforts to enact legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the decision.

The bans were imposed this week on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, while European leaders argue the regulations are necessary to control hate speech and falsehoods.
